Belated Happy New Year greetings! As another year rolls around, I have the usual list of things I would like to achieve, and among those, broadening our work in metal and glass design. We have just returned from a most wonderful trip over New Year's to New York City. It's such a great town - good food, interesting neighborhoods, theater, dance, music and, of course, art. On the coldest day of the winter storm, we spend nearly a whole day at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year I was particularly interested in looking at some of the ancient jewelry in the Egyptian and other collections for inspiration. Among my favorites was this gold crown featuring wild game and replicas of the sun. While I am unlikely to start making gold crowns, there were so many beautiful things, and I'm ready to start sawing, soldering, and melting glass. It was particularly interesting to note that jewelry making techniques from thousands of years ago has not changed much. There were peyote stitch seed bead bracelets, tube hinges, and some rather ingenious clasp mechanisms. The old saying of "what is old is new again" seems to really hold true. May 2014 bring you the comfort of favorite things old, and the anticipation of all things new.
